Chris Greenslade mixes music and painting
From The Five Studies exhibition, these two pieces have been inspired by the Spanish composer Enrique Granados, whose piano work is entitled "sketches" and specifically a work called "The Evening Bell". The two images, now sold, capture the mood of what Granados had 'sketched' in music. They are both from the area in Spain, Torrelodones, north west of Madrid.
There are two ideas of the bells in Spanish culture, one grand the other intimate. Grand bells are typically used for important announcements, while smaller bells are used for more rustic/domestic needs. In this second study, standing at the crossroads, we see a small stranger. Smaller bells were sometimes used to announce the arrival of people or warning of a stranger approaching.
