Yu Ting Li sells the Heart Sutra
In this exhibition we are also showcasing Chinese calligraphy. This is the stylized artistic writing of Chinese characters, the written form of Chinese that unites the spoken languages. Such calligraphy is considered supreme among the visual arts in China, setting the standard by which Chinese painting is judged. Yu Ting Li demonstrates her mastery of this art with several representations of Chinese calligraphy, with three forms of the Heart Sutra that was developed in China some 600 years ago from original Sanskrits. This version sold is in book form rather than as a scroll or wall composition. Li’s calligraphic form and content embodies the notion of the emptiness of lived experiences and compassion as being dialectically related. Accordingly, these works point the art of calligraphy towards the heart of cultural discourse and matters of philosophical debate regarding the human condition.
